U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton said he would have given Janavs close to a year in prison but cited her history of good works as a mitigating factor. She has volunteered for decades. Janavs, 49, of Newport Coast, Calif., must pay $250,000 in fines and was sentenced to two years of probation and 200 hours of community service. She is the 15th parent to be sentenced in the scandal that exposed weaknesses in the opaque world of elite college admissions and standardized testing. More than 50 people have been charged in connection with a scheme led by admission consultant William “Rick” Singer, who has pleaded guilty to racketeering and other crimes. Earlier this month, Douglas Hodge, the former chief executive of Pacific Investment Management Co., known as Pimco, was sentenced to nine months in prison for conspiring to commit fraud and money laundering. U.S. News & World Report Ranks Online Programs at UMass Amherst - UMass News and Media Relations

AMHERST, Mass. – Online bachelor's degree programs at the University of Massachusetts Amherst rank 20th nationally, according to a survey released by U.S. News & World Report, which also listed the university 17th for online MBA programs.

The list of the 357 schools with the best online bachelor's programs for 2018 is based on weighted factors in student engagement, faculty credentials and training, student services and technology, and peer reputation.

UMass Amherst's online graduate nursing program rose four spots over last year's ranking from 39th to 35th in the rankings.

Weighted factors used in the graduate program ranking process were student engagement, faculty credentials and training, peer reputation, student services and technology, and admissions selectivity. The weighting varied among programs.
