With a robust learning platform and multiple degree options to choose from, Keiser University was recently named to the 2020 list of top schools in the country for online learning. Keiser took the No. 26 spot on the ranking which was produced by TheBestSchools.org and ranked the top 50 schools in the U.S. by their online education portfolio.

The 2020 report was produced using information from the US Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics' Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). In addition to IPEDS data, consideration was given to numerous factors including an analysis of academic excellence, strength of faculty scholarship, tuition costs/financial aid, range of online bachelor's degree programs, and strength of online instruction.

Keiser earned high marks as a result of the more than 60 online degree programs available, including 30 bachelor's degrees. The school also scored well due to online amenities such as the English Help Center, the Online Writing Lab (OWL), and its virtual help desk.

Keiser was among three schools in Florida to earn a spot on the list. In addition, Keiser was one of only 14 private institutions of higher learning to make the top 50 and was the only private school in Florida to earn a ranking.

ECC health care programs shine | Feature Columnist - Rocky Mount Telegram

Several Edgecombe Community College health care programs recently received a thumbs-up from accrediting organizations, signifying continued commitment to quality instruction.

Health care programs have long been a hallmark of the college. Nursing was among the first allied health programs established at ECC, and for years it has been viewed as a top nursing program in the region in part because of graduates' high passing rates on licensure exams.

Another feather in the cap of healthcare training at ECC is the Lamm Building, a state-of-the-art facility on the Rocky Mount campus that maximizes the use of current simulation technology and mimics a hospital setting.

In April, the college's Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing programs received continuing accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

ACEN accreditation is a voluntary peer-review process. ECC's nursing programs first received ACEN accreditation in 2015. Though ACEN accreditation is not required for nursing education programs, it reflects an institution's tireless efforts to provide exceptional instruction and training.

The newest health care program at ECC is Ophthalmic Medical Personnel, which began in fall 2018. Ophthalmic Medical Personnel prepares students to perform ophthalmic procedures under the supervision of a licensed physician specializing in ophthalmology.

In April, the Ophthalmic Medical Personnel program received initial accreditation from its international accrediting body, the International Council of Accreditation Board of Directors.

The four-semester program was developed with input from local clinicians who recognized the need for trained individuals in the industry. All of the classes are offered in the evening, making it the first evening program in health sciences at ECC.

Both of these recent endorsements underscore the high quality of ECC's health care programs, programs that are even more critical to our communities in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Have you considered a career in health care? In addition to Nursing and Ophthalmic Medical Personnel, ECC offers programs in Nurse Aide, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Assisting, Health Information Technology, Medical Office Administration, Radiography, Surgical Technology, Community Health Worker, Medication Aide and Phlebotomy.

Registration is underway for summer semester classes, all of which will be offered online. Summer classes begin May 20.
