Even Before Pandemic - UNLV NewsCenter Even Before Pandemic - UNLV NewsCenter Posted: 05 Oct 2020 12:00 AM PDT Even before the coronavirus pandemic propelled UNLV into remote learning in the spring, online courses at UNLV were prevalent.  "There's been a steady decrease in the number of students that have never taken an online course," said Elizabeth Barrie, the director of the Office of Online Education . She recently presented during The State of Online Education webinar event. It highlighted some of the initiatives and cross-campus partnerships that contribute to student achievement and shared how faculty prepared for online learning through the summer. She noted that 95% of students who graduated in spring 2020 with an undergraduate degree had taken at least one online course. And, compared to past years, there has been an increase in the number of students who have taken more than 30 credits, or two semesters, online.

Briar Cliff University announced tuition, room, board, and fee plans for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Briar Cliff Board of Trustees approved new tuition measures, which will allow the University to implement low-to-no tuition increases as well as a new tuition commitment model.

"Briar Cliff University strives to improve the tuition pricing process for the benefit of our students while maintaining the financial integrity of the University," says Dr. Rachelle Karstens, Briar Cliff University President. "We understand 2020 has impacted many of our students, families, and communities. The challenges of this year have motivated us to reimagine the tuition process."

Like most colleges and universities, Briar Cliff University annually evaluates tuition, fees, and the rate of inflation, often resulting in a tuition increase. The new tuition commitment includes the following:

  • On-campus, full-time, undergraduate students will have a new, locked-in tuition rate. A slight increase, less than 2%, will occur for the 2021-2022 academic year. This rate will remain locked in for the students' remaining time at Briar Cliff University, subject to satisfactory academic progress.
  • Graduate programs will receive low-to-no increases for the 2021-2022 academic year. Increases to certain programs will not exceed more than 2.5%.
  • Tuition for Briar Cliff's online degree completion programs will decrease 10% overall.

Programs experiencing an increase are the lowest increases in the past ten years.

"A college education is a substantial and important investment in your future, and we hope these changes can positively influence our students' ongoing success," adds Karstens. "We promise to provide an environment where you can pursue your educational goals and achieve extraordinary outcomes."

The University also shares that their generous alumni and donor network, who are passionate about investing in and supporting students, helps provide every full-time, undergraduate student an average of $10k in financial support each year.

NEWBERRY — Newberry College has just unveiled its new Heritage Scholarship, a renewable award available specifically for Newberry County residents who enroll in on-campus programs.

The $3,000 scholarship is available to graduates of Newberry County high schools and homeschooled Newberry County residents who are admitted to Newberry College and enroll in traditional programs. This designation excludes online degree-completion programs such as respiratory therapy and RN-to-BSN. The scholarship will be available beginning with the 2021-22 academic year.

"This scholarship reflects our commitment to the families of Newberry, to provide additional financial assistance to help them afford a high-quality, private college education," said President Maurice Scherrens. "The College is skyrocketing in all national rankings, so this is the perfect time to unveil this scholarship as a way to express our desire to become the college of first choice for more and more of our local high school graduates."

Area high schools include Newberry, Mid-Carolina, Whitmire Community School and Newberry Academy. Currently, approximately 10 percent of the Newberry College student body hails from Newberry County.

"We are proud to offer this scholarship to help more local students achieve an outstanding private college education in their own community," said Christopher M. Harris, dean of enrollment management. "Newberry College continues its commitment to affordability, and that commitment starts at home."

In the 2019 academic year, Newberry College awarded $18.5 million in institutional student aid. As a result, the college ranked No. one in South Carolina and No. 32 in the nation for least student loan debt per borrower, according to a report by online financial marketplace LendEDU. U.S. News & World Report has also named the college among the southeast's top 10 most affordable institutions for the fifth consecutive year.
