Even Before Pandemic - UNLV NewsCenter Even Before Pandemic - UNLV NewsCenter Posted: 05 Oct 2020 12:00 AM PDT Even before the coronavirus pandemic propelled UNLV into remote learning in the spring, online courses at UNLV were prevalent.  "There's been a steady decrease in the number of students that have never taken an online course," said Elizabeth Barrie, the director of the Office of Online Education . She recently presented during The State of Online Education webinar event. It highlighted some of the initiatives and cross-campus partnerships that contribute to student achievement and shared how faculty prepared for online learning through the summer. She noted that 95% of students who graduated in spring 2020 with an undergraduate degree had taken at least one online course. And, compared to past years, there has been an increase in the number of students who have taken more than 30 credits, or two semesters, online.

The full lists, in alphabetical order, can be found below.

Project management is an area of expertise that is valued in every sector, in every field, and in every industry. The ability to lead teams, plan complex projects, and see a project through to the end is useful whether in government, business, education, and any other field. And to make the most of their career potential, project managers are turning to online master's degrees and certificate programs. As the editors state, "Because of the growing demand, colleges and universities have begun ramping up their curriculum with project management concentrations in the MBA and Master of Science, or with specialized Master of Project Management degrees." According to the editors, "An online master's in project management also removes the need to attend a physical campus which opens up more educational opportunities. A student isn't limited to the schools in their geographic area, nor do they have to relocate to attend the school of their choice."

Other professionals find a graduate certificate program in project management to be a valuable way to break into this growing field.  A certificate is a quick start, and allows professionals to build on their current education and work experience. According to the editors, "you're a working professional already in a project management position, or looking for a promotion to more responsibility that may include project management, a certificate program can offer just what you need." There are many different avenues to explore. As the editors explain, "Colleges and universities offer certificates through a variety of departments: business schools, Extended Study, Continuing Education, School of Professional Studies, or others," meaning that students can find a certificate program better suited to their particular field.

Value Colleges has a mission to help future students - whether they are working professionals, new graduates, minority and first-generation students, or others - to find residential and online degree programs that will help them make their goals a reality. Value Colleges is independent and unbiased, ranking degree programs, providing guides for the complex financial and professional questions of college students, and offering honest facts about the potential and pitfalls of a college education.

"Affordable" and "accessible" are not words typically associated with graduate school, even though having a degree or certification can be crucial for career advancement. To mitigate common economic and geographic barriers, established online platforms edX and Coursera have special programs like MicroMasters and MasterTracks, which offer graduate-level courses for a fraction of the average on-campus price tag.

Ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, they can cover up to 50% of a university master's program's curriculum. Upon completion, you can usually apply your MicroMasters or MasterTrack credits towards full master's programs to reduce costs and finish your degree faster.

You can take these as stand-alone programs to advance your career prospects or as a stepping stone towards a full master's program. And since both platforms count top universities among their partners, that could eventually mean lower overall tuition costs at schools like MIT, Duke, Indiana University, Georgia Tech, the University of Michigan, and more.

Below, we compared the basic details for each bite-sized graduate program below. Ultimately, the best platform will be the one that offers the program closest to your particular interests and goals. But, in terms of services, edX may edge out Coursera — its offerings are cheaper, significantly more varied, and more lenient overall.

You can find detailed FAQs on Coursera's MasterTracks and edX's MicroMasters here, and learn more about Coursera and edX here, including how they compare to each other as e-learning platforms.
