UVA's Online Degree Completion Program Enrolls Its Largest Class Ever - UVA Today Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:31 PM PST "I am doing this for bucket-list reasons," Ivey said. "Not finishing my degree was one of my biggest regrets." The BIS program is designed for working adults and offers a UVA-quality education online to part-time adult students who have some college but no degree. The new BIS students range in age from only a few years out of high school to retirees, and they are drawn from across the commonwealth and beyond. ![]() The 111 students starting in fall 2020 and spring 2021 make up the largest class ever for the program, which began more than 20 years ago. The class also marks progress in the University's strategic plan, the 2030 Plan put together by President Jim Ryan, which says UVA will "scale our bachelor's completion program and provide a high-quality, easily accessible, and affordable education." "The working adults in our online degree completion programs at UVA are part of the University's strength, and I'm thrilled that the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program is making a UVA education possible for more people, wherever they are in the country or in life," Ryan said. Alex Hernandez, dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, said the record enrollment year shows that education can transform lives, regardless of age or life circumstances. "The bachelor's is the mightiest of all the degrees. And our adult learners are using BIS as a pathway to opportunity, whether it is earning a promotion, starting a new venture, or attending graduate school," Hernandez said. |

The college plans to begin accepting applications this spring and launch the program in August. Thomas said in a statement. "Our world-class faculty are uniquely capable of using the expertise we have developed by producing transformative leaders for more than 154 years to make highly-relevant instruction available through cutting-edge platforms and delivery methods." |
SPIA Online Bachelor's Powers Up in Rankings — Again - NC State News Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:37 AM PST ![]() NC State's online bachelor's degree, Leadership in the Public Sector, continued its meteoric rise in national rankings, climbing 25 spots on this year's list of the best online college programs, compiled by U.S. News & World Report. The program is now ranked 14th in the nation, up from 39th place last year and 71st place three years ago. In 2017, the program didn't even make the top 100, ranking 103rd. The annual survey of 1,600 online degree programs conducted by U.S. News measures factors such as student engagement, services and technologies, faculty credentials and expert opinions. "We certainly check all those boxes," says Irwin Morris, interim director of the Leadership in the Public Sector degree program. Morris, the William T. Kretzer Distinguished Professor of Humanities, is executive director of the School of Public and International Affairs, academic home to the online bachelor's program. Morris notes that the leadership program is unique, the only fully online undergraduate degree completion program at NC State. The program is open to students who have earned at least 60 college credits but never completed an undergraduate degree. It's a great match for students transferring credit from a community college. And it's popular with veterans and active-duty service members. "One thing that makes our program increasingly valuable is it's completely online," Morris says. "Most of our students are professionally active. Many have full-time jobs so it's not feasible for them to take classes that meet during the day." Morris credits the quality of the faculty and robust academic advising with keeping students engaged and on track. Plus, he says, a partnership with DELTA, NC State's distance education experts, ensures that the online experience meets students' needs and expectations. Graduate Programs RankedSeveral of NC State's online graduate programs also performed well on this year's U.S. News list. NC State's online master's program in engineering ranked sixth overall, an improvement of one spot over last year. NC State's Jenkins Online MBA program ranked 16th, as did the university's online master's program in computer information technology. The online master's degree in education ranked 42nd in the nation. NC State's graduate programs in business administration, business analytics, engineering and education were recognized for their efforts to support veterans. |
